Controllable and affordable utility-scale electricity from intermittent wind resources and compressed air energy storage (CAES)
نویسنده
چکیده
World wind energy resources are substantial, and in many areas, such as the US and northern Europe, could in theory supply all of the electricity demand. However, the remote or challenging location (i.e. offshore) and especially the intermittent character of the wind resources present formidable barriers to utilization on the scale required by a modern industrial economy. All of these technical challenges can be overcome. Long distance transmission is well understood, while offshore wind technology is being developed rapidly. Intermittent wind power can be transformed to a controllable power source with hybrid wind/compressed air energy storage (CAES) systems. The cost of electricity from such hybrid systems (including transmission) is affordable, and comparable to what users in some modern industrial economies already pay for electricity. This approach to intermittent energy integration has many advantages compared to the current strategy of forcing utilities to cope with supply uncertainty and transmission costs. Above all, it places intermittent wind on an equal technical footing with every other generation technology, including nuclear power, its most important long-term competitor. r 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Security-Constrained Unit Commitment Considering Large-Scale Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) Integrated With Wind Power Generation
Environmental concerns and depletion of nonrenewable resources has made great interest towards renewable energy resources. Cleanness and high potential are factors that caused fast growth of wind energy. However, the stochastic nature of wind energy makes the presence of energy storage systems (ESS) in wind integrated power systems, inevitable. Due to capability of being used in large-scale sys...
متن کاملA Novel Hybrid-Fuel Storage System of Compressed Air Energy for China
Compressed air energy storage (CAES) is a large-scale technology that provides long-duration energy storage. It is promising for balancing the large-scale penetration of intermittent and dispersed sources of power, such as wind and solar power, into electric grids. The existing CAES plants utilize natural gas (NG) as fuel. However, China is rich in coal but is deficient in NG; therefore, a hybr...

The use of photovoltaic (PV) cells in domestic and industrial applications has grown rapidly through the recent years. Constructing PV plants is a very smart measure to produce free electricity in large scales, especially in the countries with higher solar irradiation potential. On the other hand, compressed air energy storage (CAES) has already been proposed to be employed for energy storage a...
متن کاملEnergy Storage Technologies for Utility Scale Intermittent Renewable Energy Systems
In current conventional utility systems, fossil fuel or nuclear power plants must back up intermittent renewable electricity generators if the utility grid is to have acceptable reliability. For low levels of intermittent power, this can be achieved without difficulty or added expense. For high levels this reliance on other generators becomes explicit and increasingly expensive, and transmissio...
